Renewing a vehicle registration after 15 years may sound complicated, but it’s actually simple and mostly online if you follow the right steps. I recently renewed my 2011 WagonR (Chandigarh registration) and completed most of the process without visiting the RTO.

Below is a step-by-step guide to help you renew your vehicle smoothly using mParivahan / State Parivahan portal.

Step 1: Visit Your State Parivahan Website

First, go to your State Transport (Parivahan) website.

Example:
For Chandigarh vehicles → Search for Chandigarh RLA Parivahan website

  • Download the PDF list of required documents

  • Download Form No. 25 (Application for renewal of Registration Certificate)

📌 Each state may have small differences, so always follow your state-specific guidelines.

Step 2: Get Vehicle Fitness Certificate from an Authorized Vendor

Before applying online, you must obtain a Fitness Certificate.

  • Visit an authorized fitness testing center

  • In Chandigarh, authorized vendors include:

    • Maruti

    • Toyota

    • Other approved agencies

💰 Charges (Example):

  • Fitness fee for my WagonR 2011 model: ₹1,750

After inspection, you will receive a Fitness Certificate, which is mandatory for RC renewal.

Step 3: Fill Form No. 25 (RC Renewal Form)

  • Fill Form No. 25 carefully as per the downloaded PDF instructions

  • Vehicle details must match the RC exactly

📌 Important Address Tip:
I have shifted to Punjab, and my Aadhaar address is updated to Punjab, but:

  • For RC renewal, no address proof was asked

  • If you do not want to change address, simply:

    • Write the same address as per old RC in Form 25

This avoids unnecessary address change procedures.

Step 4: Physical Inspection (Very Simple)

In some states, a basic inspection is still required.

Example (Chandigarh):

  • Inspection officers sit at Sector 23, Children Traffic Park

  • What they do:

    • Take owner’s photo with the vehicle

    • Verify chassis/engine number

    • Sign and approve Form No. 25

⏱️ Process takes 5–10 minutes only

Step 5: Pay Renewal Fees & Road Tax

After inspection, pay the required fees.

💰 Charges (Chandigarh example):

  • RC Renewal Fee (15 years): ₹5,700

  • Road Tax (5 years): ₹975

(Charges may vary slightly by state and vehicle type.)

Step 6: Upload Documents on Parivahan Portal

Now complete the online part:

Upload:

  • ✔️ Filled & signed Form No. 25

  • ✔️ Fitness Certificate

  • ✔️ Payment receipts (if required)

Submit the application through the mParivahan / State Parivahan portal.

Step 7: Track Application & Get Renewed RC

  • Track your application status online

  • Renewed RC is usually:

    • Sent by post, or

    • Updated digitally in mParivahan app

✅ No repeated RTO visits required.

Key Points to Remember

  • ✔️ Fitness certificate is compulsory

  • ✔️ Address proof not required if address is unchanged

  • ✔️ Most work is online

  • ✔️ Inspection is quick and hassle-free

  • ✔️ Ideal for people who have moved to another state but want to keep old RC
